Covenant Relationships vs. Commercial Relationships
Think a moment about your relationships in the community of faith. Are they dominantly more like your relationship with your local hardware store or more like your deepest loving relationships?
Commercial relationships like the one you have at the hardware store are about a balanced give and take of service and goods for money--ultimately they are about "me." Covenant relationships, like the one you have with your spouse, your children and your Father, are about the other--not about you. They can't be broken by someone not living up to their side of the bargain.
We in the Community of Faith sometimes get mixed up about the kinds of relationships we seek. Instead of seeking to "be fed", we are about seeking to feed--as in "Feed my sheep." It's a good thing to ponder and pray about.
